Telehealth Student Practicum

The Telehealth Student Practicum is a 40-hour program for students to gain understanding of telehealth and the use of technology in the healthcare industry through education and shadowing experiences. This program allows students to explore the crossover between technology and healthcare, while seeing how telehealth strongly supports rural health.

During the program, students’ participation will include:

  • 12 hours – Online Education

  • Core Concepts in Telehealth certificate

  • Health Informatics training modules

  • Telehealth training modules

  • Cyber security modules

  • 28 hours – Shadowing Experience

  • 8-hour Day in Sioux Falls at Telehealth hub sites

  • 20-Hour Placement in a rural health facility

South Dakota Legislative Page:

Each legislative session, high school students from across South Dakota have an opportunity for a firsthand look at the legislative process by serving as pages for the South Dakota Legislature. Pages are appointed to serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate for seven to 10 days during one of the five term periods. The deadline to apply is in October.

Rural Electric Youth Tour:

Lake Region Electric will be sponsoring one or two area high school juniors and seniors on an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The weeklong trip will be held June 15-21, 2024.

Each June, over 1800 high school juniors and seniors travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Rural Electric Youth Tour. During the week, they learn about Washington, D.C., government, cooperative philosophy, and rural electrification. The student delegates are selected and sponsored by their local rural electric cooperatives. The South Dakota Rural Electric Association (SDREA) coordinates arrangements for the South Dakota students.

Some of the sites that may be toured are the Lincoln Memorial, National Cathedral, The White House, Air and Space Museum, Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol, Ford’s Theatre, The Kennedy Center, the Metro, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, The Smithsonian, Iwo Jima Statue, National Archives, U.S Supreme Court, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Students will also participate in a briefing with the South Dakota Congressional Delegation.

Who is Eligible? Area high school juniors and seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Lake Region Electric.

What Does It Cost? This trip is free for the students. Lake Region Electric Association, along with the other electric cooperatives that participate in the weeklong event, fund the tour. The student’s transportation, room and board, entertainment, and sightseeing events are covered by LREA.

How do I Qualify? Delegates will be selected by LREA after all applications and statements or essays are reviewed. Each Entrant must submit an application and short statement or essay, not to exceed 300 words on the topic, “If chosen as a youth tour delegate, you will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to experience and learn about America’s rich history. What moment in American history do you wish you had been a part of, and what would you have contributed?” Applications are due no later than December 27, 2023! South Dakota Youth Trooper Academy:

The Youth Trooper Academy is an intensive, one week, residential learning experience for young adults who are entering their senior year of high school or have just graduated high school in 2024. The Youth Trooper Academy is held at the South Dakota Law Enforcement Training Academy in Pierre, South Dakota. The academy is held in June.

The AIM HIGH Flight Academy is a three-week program designed to teach and inspire future aviators. The academy is held at South Dakota State University and has session in June and July.

Davis Bachall Scholar Program- Application Deadline is January 19th

This is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime, all-expense-paid opportunity that connects science-curious students with peers and mentors while exploring the modern world of STEM research.  Scholars will spend four weeks exploring leading national and international laboratories and universities in the Black Hills, across the Midwest and in Chicago, Illinois.  The group will also visit national monuments and landmarks of cultural significance during their time together - with all expenses covered by the program. The program runs from June to July.

Job Corps-Boxelder

The Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers are funded by the U.S. Forest Service and provide trades training to underserved youth, ages 16-24. Our primary focus is youth in low-income households, who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, and young people emancipating from Foster Care programs. Training is provided in the Forest Service Center, where lodging, food, and basic medical care are provided. The program is open to all who qualify for public assistance and meet age requirements.
